Exploring The World of Men's Wedding Bands

— by Cullen Jewellery — Reading time 5 minutes

Choosing a wedding band for a man is more than a formality. You might be drawn to a classic men’s wedding band or are on the hunt for something more distinctive, there's a style, metal, and fit for every groom. In this guide, we’re exploring the most common questions about men’s wedding rings to help you make the right decision.

What are the different men's wedding band styles?

While engagement rings come in an endless amount of styles and aesthetics, there’s more variety in men’s wedding bands than you might expect. The most common shapes are flat, domed, and bevelled. Jewellers typically use these foundations and build their designs from there.

A flat band like our Classic Flat Ring is your go-to for a classic men's wedding band. It’s flat on the inside and outside, clean, minimal, and perfect for those who prefer simplicity. A domed ring has a flat interior for comfort but features a softly rounded exterior for a more traditional, curved profile. Then there’s the bevelled band, which sits somewhere between the two — offering a mix of gentle curves and crisp, angled edges for a modern yet refined finish.

Once you’ve chosen a style, we can experiment with metals, textures and even gemstones to create a look as unique or classic as you’d like. Book an appointment with us here to discuss your dream wedding ring.

How should men's wedding bands fit?

A men’s wedding ring should fit snugly on the finger without feeling tight. It should slide over the knuckle with a bit of resistance but not require force to remove. While women’s wedding rings might feel slightly tighter, the band is generally much thinner so a snug fit is desired – if we went for the same fit with a men's wedding band – it’d feel uncomfortable fairly soon. Wider bands can feel tighter, so it’s worth sizing up slightly if choosing a thicker ring. Trying rings in different band widths and metals can help you get a feel for what’s most comfortable for everyday wear, so be sure to shop around with different styles. What are black men's wedding bands?

Black wedding rings have become increasingly popular for their bold, modern look. These can be made from a variety of materials. At Cullen Jewellery, our black wedding bands are crafted from carbon fibre making them durable and comfortable, as well as lightweight.

Best metal for men's wedding bands?

We offer men’s wedding bands in a variety of different metals. Platinum, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, tantalum and carbon fibre are all materials we use in our collection of men’s wedding bands.

When it comes to choosing between precious metals there are only two considerations – how durable it is (or how durable you need it to be) and what you like the look of. Yellow gold is a classic metal choice and a gold wedding ring will never go out of style. Rose gold, while not found in nature, is made by alloying gold with metals like copper to create its warm hue. The result is a long-lasting colour that won’t fade, making it a great choice for men wanting something a little different.

If you’re drawn to the cool tones of white gold but want something more durable (as white gold needs to be re plated to maintain its shine) then platinum is an excellent alternative. It’s one of the rarest and toughest metals available, making it ideal for those who work with their hands or around chemicals.

For a more modern twist, black carbon fibre wedding bands are gaining popularity. They merge innovation with style — lightweight, scratch-resistant, and boldly black, they’re perfect for those who love a minimalist, monochrome look. Carbon fibre is extremely lightweight too, and resistant to scratching and corrosion, so also perfect for anyone with an active lifestyle.

Tantalum is somewhat of an unexplored metal in the jewellery world. It has a satisfying weight to it, as well as a striking and rugged metallic look. It’s blue-ish grey colour is perfect for unique men's wedding bands and it is also hypoallergenic.

Can you resize a men's wedding band?

It is possible to resize a men’s wedding band, depending on which metal type and style eligibility. Our workshop can assess the resizing availability and if eligible, and within 12 months of your rings completion, can be resized free of charge. Be aware that rings can only be resized up or down to a limit, and for each of our rings the relevant resizing ranges can be found on their individual product pages. It is worth mentioning that the resizing process involves adding or removing pieces of metal, and we adhere to strict standards to ensure your ring is minimally impacted by this process. You can read more about resizing here .
