When thinking of understated fine jewellery or fashion rings many will straight away go to signet rings, a statement piece that has long been popular as an accessory for adding a touch of sophistication and elegance to any jewellery collection. Read on for the low down on signet rings, and if it’s the style you have been searching for.

What is a signet ring?
Traditionally, signet rings had a practical purpose and were used by royalty and pharaohs in ancient Egypt to sign and seal documents by pressing the face down which typically had a unique design, crest or symbol. In fact the word signet actually comes from the latin word ‘signum’ which means ‘sign’. These rings were used to mark and seal documents by pressing the face, and were historically marked with a unique family crest, royal emblem or other moniker into hot wax.

Signet rings today
Today, signet rings may not be sealing as many documents as they once were but now exist as a timeless accessory for both men and women. While traditionally signet rings were worn on a number of fingers, in modern times the signet ring has gravitated towards the pinky finger, because the smaller size of the little finger allows for an out-of-the-way comfortable fit, and won’t overshadow any other jewellery you may wear. For a bolder look, wearing a signet ring on the middle or index finger can also add a touch of personality and a spin on the classic placement is sure to turn heads.
Types of signet rings
Here at Cullen, we offer a few different spins on the classic signet ring. Our signets can include two lab diamond stones flanking the face of the ring, or can be left plain for an understated look and to let the precious metal shine. We also offer two different fonts to engrave your initial or a loved ones. Opt for either a bold classic lettering look, or a cursive feel for a softer and elegant detail. Our signets come in either 18k Yellow or Rose Gold, as well as Platinum.
